HIGH COMPLICATION HIGHLIGHTS

Audemars Piguet Chronograph Tourbillon (Ref. 25977OR.00.D005CR.01)

A collection dedicated to complex watches, the Royal Oak Tourbillon and Chronograph house an exceptional movement specially designed for it: hand-wound calibre 2889. Representing an evolution of calibre 2879, this mechanism features several innovative developments. The level of quality of a chronograph depends in particular on the precise execution of the column-wheel and the coupling lever. Crafted in titanium, a material selected for its lightness and its low force of inertia distinguishes extreme resistance, the coupling lever of this new movement. This ensures that the sweep seconds hand runs, stops and returns to zero without wobbling or hesitating. Opposite the 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock, calibre 2889 displays the small seconds at 9 o’clock. Tourbillon Cage, the dial cut-out reveals an original tourbillon revolving once a minute which refines time measurement by compensating the effects of gravity when the watch is in a vertical position.

IWC Schaffhausen Ingenieur Constant-Force Tourbillon (Ref. IW590001)

With its spectacular Ingenieur Constant-Force Tourbillon in a platinum and ceramic case, Swiss watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen has secured itself a leading position in the Constructors’ Championship of Haute Horlogerie. To ensure a particularly regular rate, the watchmakers integrated the patented constant-force mechanism in a tourbillon. Positioned at “9 o’clock”, the impressive constant-force tourbillon provides a fascinating view of its layered construction. Connoisseurs of precision mechanics will particularly enjoy watching the complex interaction of the springs, wheels and pallets. The striking black tourbillon bridge is calibrated to facilitate reading off the seconds and, like the black screws, underscores the dial’s high-tech look. As a captivating contrast to this, we see the delicate, gold coloured Glucydur® beryllium alloy balance with its high- precision adjustment cam on the balance arms. The tourbillon revolves around its own axis once every 60 seconds to offset the influence of gravity on any positional error in the balance and its adverse effect on the rate. The new 94800-calibre basic movement was developed entirely internally by IWC. It features two barrels, which provide the energy for the higher torque required to drive

the constant-force tourbillon. It also provides the moon phase module with the necessary power. IWC’s hallmark double moon display for the northern and southern hemispheres also makes its debut in the new design.

Breguet Classique Complications (Ref. 5335BR/42/9W6)

The Breguet Tourbillon Messidor watch in 18-carat rose gold accentuates its beauty with pink gold dial ornaments set into the sapphire crystal, Off-centred at 12 o’clock. With Tourbillon regulator, the open-worked hand-wound movement is entirely engraved by hand. Running seconds on the tourbillon carriage at 6 o’clock itself secured by two sapphire crystals, including on the caseback.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition à Répétitions Minutes (Ref. Q50125 50)

The creation of a minute repeater watch requires not only decades of experience in some of the most exacting aspects of Haute Horlogerie but also an in-depth knowledge of musical theory and of the physics of sound. The mechanical hand-wound movement, Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 947, is crafted, assembled and decorated by hand. The Sound is made up of four main components, the volume, duration, richness and pitch. At the Manufacture, all measurements are taken using a microphone placed at a given distance from the sound source, but also with the assistance of a laser so as to obtain measurements that are not disturbed by the ambient medium. Jaeger-LeCoultre specialists have studied each of these parameters so as to obtain the best possible combination. The result is quite simply breathtaking. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition à Répétitions Minutes produces a sound that has never been heard before in a wristwatch. With 64 decibels, durations of over 600 milliseconds and a richness of 9 partials, the sound produced surpasses any performance previously obtained with a wristwatch. Even the least musically-inclined listener will immediately notice the difference.

Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Traditionnelle Calibre 2253 (High Complication, Ref. X88R5097)

Presented in pink gold case, entirely constructed by Vacheron Constantin’s engineering department and developed over several thousands of hours, the Calibre 2253 provides information derived from Earth’s orbit around the sun, notably a perpetual calendar, the equation of time and the times of sunrise and sunset. It features a tourbillon escapement as well. The equation of time is probably the most fascinating complication in this outstanding model. Its purpose is to indicate the difference in minutes between the variable solar time shown by a sundial and the constant mean time of clocks and watches. Making this complication work does indeed call for a particular skill. It depends on the equation cam, a waisted oval, shaped like a figure 8 and calculated according to the daily declination of the sun observed from a given spot. The cam rotates once a year while a hand following its contour indicates the equation of time at between 10 and 11 o’clock on the dial of the Patrimony Traditionnelle Calibre 2253 timepiece. Other functions include the times of sunrise and sunset throughout the year at a given locality (chosen by the client), the tourbillon carriage. Despite supporting extra mechanical complexity, the Calibre 2253 – bearing the Hallmark of Geneva – exhibits a breathtaking amount of power reserve – some 336 hours or 14 days of running time drawn from two pairs of coupled barrels.

Zenith Christophe Colombe Hurricane (Ref. 18.2212.8805/36.C713)

A quest notably expressed through the conception of the El Primero movement beating at the exceptional frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour, followed by the invention of a gravity control system – the ultimate evolution of the marine chronometer. While the Academy Christophe Colomb Hurricane combines these two guarantors of absolute precision, it adds a third enhancement, this time based on the suppression of deviations from isochronism. Its fusée-chain transmission system guarantees constant force, resulting in rigorously stable amplitude throughout the running period. The shape of the fusée used in the Academy Christophe Colomb Hurricane was dictated by the optimal force with which the Zenith master-watchmakers wished to endow the barrel. Its grooved cone-like silhouette, as well as its dimensions, stem from careful calculations, notably combining theoretical force and the duration of the power reserve. These particularly complex calculations were performed for each of the seven stages involved in the construction. Along with its fusée-chain transmission, the watch also cancels out gravity. Working on the principle that maintaining the regulating organ in a horizontal position results in the best possible balance amplitude and thus generates the best precision, Zenith conceived and patented a revolutionary Gravity Control system designed to ensure that the regulating organ and the escapement are permanently kept in this position.

HIGH JEWELLERY HIGHLIGHTS

Roger Dubuis Excalibur Skeleton Double Flying Tourbillon (Ref. RDDBEX0407)

Limited to 88 pieces, Roger Dubuis combines exceptional design and movement in the pink gold 45mm timepiece. Being the only brand on the market to offer a double tourbillon skeleton, the timepiece’s exceptional design is supported by technical challenges. Uncompromising excellence, Roger Dubuis creates the most sophisticated and fascinating variation of the tourbillon with the absence of a bridge on the top, makes it seems suspended in its carriage. With differential at 4.30 and 7.30 (one rotation per minute for each), the skeleton movement is designed from the outset, rather than the usual procedure of “skeletonising” an existing movement. The watchmakers dedicate themselves to true beauty and daring design with total 1200 hours of manufacturing, of which 360 are focused to achieve the criteria of the Poinçon de Genève. Detailed finishing inside and outside with the skeleton enables the viewer to admire the exceptional finishes off the movement that is made of hand-finished 319 components. The 60 baguette-cut diamonds (2.09 cts approx.) on the case, lugs, flange, and buckle are specially tailored in different sizes.

Calibre 1270P is Piaget’s first ultra-thin automatic tourbillon movement, measuring a mere 5.55 mm thick. Fully revealed through a sapphire crystal dial, this feat is also highlighted by exceptionally sophisticated gem-setting. Baguette and brilliant-cut diamonds adorn the case and its sides, including the exhibition case-back revealing the tourbillon carriage and the power-reserve display, as well as the folding clasps and the rings surrounding the oscillating weight and the Tourbillon. Over 140 hours of gem-setting were required to craft this numbered model featuring 18.4 carats of diamonds.
